"It's useless," I said.
"I can't go to bed
'Til my Beddy-Bye Teddy is found.
There's no way I'd sleep,
I'd just lie there and weep
And snuffle that nose snuffling sound.
You know that it's true,
So I won't put you through
All that wailing, and cryng, and tears;
I'll stay up 'til he's found,
I know that he's bound
To show up in a couple of years."
"Now, Darling, it's late,
And even though you hate
Going to be all alone,
You do need you rest,
And I think that it's best,"
Said my mom in a motherly tone.
"But, Mommy!" I whined
"I'm sure we can find
My Beddy-Bye Teddy real soon.
He always appears
Whenever he hears
The last page of Goodnight Moon."
"I'll sit in your lap;
He won't know it's a trap
If we read every page of the book.
I'm sure he'll come out,"
I said without doubt,
"But remember, pretend not to look."
The story soon ended
And we hadn't apprehended
My Beddy-Bye Teddy at all.
My mom shook her head
And led me to bed
As I started to bellow and bawl.
"Not yet," I declared,
As my mom stood and glared.
I had to come up with a plan.
"I can't go to bed,"
I said shaking my head,
"Surely, you must understand."
"I know what will do it.
We'll have to see to it,
'Cause Beddy-Bye Teddy won't miss
A chance for a treat,
(He sure loves to eat.)
And I know he'll show up to eat this;
Sweet, yellow honey
We'll have to spread plenty
On top of some warm, buttered toast.
Cold milk in a glass
And Teddy won't pass
Up that," I pronounced in a boast.
But Teddy stayed hidden,
And even though he didn't
Appear like I said that he would;
I got lucky and ate
The food on his plate,
'Cause my mommy said that I could.
But my time had run out
And though I started to pout,
Still Mommy was standing her ground.
She tucked me in tight
And said that she might
Keep looking 'til Teddy was found.
She gave me a kiss,
Then she asked, "What is this?"
Patting the lump that was there.
She reached under the spread
That covered my bed
And pulled out . . . Sweet Beddy-Bye Bear.
